Tidy Town

July 9th, 2007

The Fahan community are doing sterling work in their area. Groups have been organised to tidy up St Mura’s Graveyard and work is progressing well.

Visitors are now able to view this historic graveyard without weeds blocking their way. The graveyard is famous for an old church built on the monastic site of St. Mura’s Abbey, and in the graveyard is the ancient St. Mura’s cross,( 8th cent.) a celtic cross etched on a stone slab.

Agnes Elizabeth Jones, a nurse who served with Florence Nightingale in the Crimea, is buried here. Across in the new St Mura’s church in the graveyard there is a memorial to the 256 seamen who lost their lives with the sinking of HMS Laurentic during the 1st World War.
