Funeral of tragic death woman
THE funeral of the Irish teacher whose body was found on the shorefront in Buncrana takes place today.
A passerby discovered the body of 56-year-old Anne Doherty on Saturday at 12.30pm, who then informed the local gardaí.
Her car was later found parked at the Shorefront car park opposite the leisure centre.
Ms Doherty was from Derry but had strong Inishowen connections.
A forensic team arrived on the scene shortly after the grim discovery and closed off the area.
A postmortem was carried out on the body on Monday evening.
However, a gardaí spokesperson confirmed that foul play is not suspected in the circumstances around Ms Doherty’s death.
Tributes have been paid to the well-known teacher whose sudden death has shocked the entire northwest community.
Ms Doherty taught for more than 20 years at Saint Brecan’s College in Derry.
She taught Irish at schools across Derry as well as the Gaeltacht, Gweedore, An Gaeláras and in more recent times, the North West Regional College.
Chief executive at An Gaeláras said Ms Doherty would be remembered for her “patience and compassion”.
He said: “She was a truly decent human being who was a pleasure to meet at any time.
“Her passing is a tragedy, not just for Pauline and her family circle but also for her family within the community of Irish-speakers and learners.
“We will cherish her memories with fondness.”
Her partner Pauline, her brothers and sisters and her entire family circle survive Ms Doherty.
Her funeral leaves from her home in Derry for Requiem mass at 10am in Saint Columb’s Church, Waterside, with burial afterwards in Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Ardmore.
