Well Done
Well done to Malin Head Youth Club for the beautiful arrangements of flowers and shrubs recently planted in the grounds of Star of the Sea Church, Malin Head. They add much beauty and fragrance to the entrance of the church.
Charity Auction
In aid of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research to be held in Tullys Bar, Carndonagh on Sunday next May 4starting at 6pm. Many items to be auctioned including a helicopter ride, signed sporting and showband memorabilia, a full day pass to Rally School Ireland, weekend breaks, VIP ticket to Villa Park.
Come along and treat yourself or a loved one to a fantastic present while helping a very worthy cause.
Death
The death took place in Boston of Rodger Houton, of Hyde Park, formerly of Ballyhelion, Malin Head, and Jamaica Plain, on April 10. Rodger Houton was born in Malin Head, on January 27, 1924 to Rose Ann Houton (Doherty) and James Houton. He was one of eight children. His brothers were Bernard(Barney) who died in 2004, Thomas who died in 2002, and Daniel who died in 1981. His sisters are Mary (Cullen) the only surviving sibling in the US, Ellen (Curran) who died in the US in 2007, Bridget(McLaughlin) who lives in Canada, and Annie(Hunter) of Slieveban, Malin Head. Rodger was a hard-working man his entire life and was off working in Scotland at the age of 14. He emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts in 1948 where he met and married his wife Kathleen Nevin, originally from Co. Roscommon on May 24, 1954, but has been back to his birthplace several times since. He was a retired Boston Gas employee with 42 years of service. He loved telling stories and reminiscing about Ireland. He was an avid sports fan. He also enjoyed the company of his friends, Irish music, dancing and a good joke. His Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Dedham, and interment took place in New Calvary Cemetery. Sympathy is extended to his sons and daughters Geraldine M. Curran and her husband Paul of Hyde Park, Denis C. and Anne Houton of Jamaica Plain, Kathy A. Davis and her husband Jim of Nashua, NH, and James P. and his wife Vici of Appleton, Wisconsin; his sisters Mary Cullen of Jamaica Plain, Bridget McLaughlin of Canada, and Annie Hunter, Slieveban, Malin Head, 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, all his nieces and nephews in Ireland, the U.S. and Canada, and his many relations. He was pre-deceased by his wife Kathleen 30 years ago, and also his brothers and sister: the late Thomas Houton, Barney Houton, Ellen Curran and Daniel Houton.
Well done
Well done to Kieran O’Connor Farren, Slieveban, Malin Head, who was boxing in the junior cadets section in the National Stadium, Dublin last weekend. He was beaten at the semi-final stage. His season is now over after a very successful year in which he was crowned Ulster champion and got to an all Ireland final at boy 2, 48 kilos. His parents, Kelly Anne and Robert wish to thank his coaches at Carndonagh ABC for taking him to all the tournaments throughout the year.
Pilgrimage to Malin Well
The Annual Pilgrimage to the ruined Church and Grotto at Malin Well will take place on Sunday, May 11, leaving the Star of the Sea Church, Malin Head at 3pm. A minibus will be provided for those who have difficulty walking.
Tenders Invited

Fashion and beauty
A fabulous fashion and beauty night will be held in the Ballyliffin Lodge on Thursday, May 1 at 8pm in aid of Kiddies Corner, Malin Community Playgroup. Jewellery, fashion, shoes, bags, perfume, make-up and those must-haves for ladies of all ages. There will be fashion parades throughout the night with a grand makeover finale for three lucky ladies. Tickets available in usual local outlets, playgroup and with all contributors.
Teen Disco
A May Bank Holiday Teen Disco will be held in Tul na Ri, Carndonagh on Friday May 2, from 9.15 – 11.15pm. Music by DJ Steve. In aid of Carndonagh Boxing Club. Strictly no alcohol.
CCS School Reunion
Did you start C.C.S. in 1993? Did you sit the Leaving Cert in 1998? If so, there is a ten year reunion planned for Sunday May 4 in the Ballyliffin Hotel. Tickets are 25 euro for Dinner, Band and Disco and are on sale in Valu-Clean (Buncrana, Carndonagh and Moville) and Norris’ Shop, Moville. Tickets to be bought by 27 April. All proceeds to charity.
Daredevil Karl
A Malin Head man is searching for daredevil types to help him break an Irish record. Skydiver Karl Carey needs 100 people to jump out of a plane with him on Friday August 1. The record-breaking charity attempt is part of the annual Irish Skydiving Festival. The day will benefit charities all over Ireland and raise thousands of euro for their great causes.
Karl began skydiving ten years ago at the Irish Parachute Club in County Offaly, and has logged over 1,300 jumps. He is a fully qualified skydiving instructor and tandem master. He has a business called Skydive 4 Charity which gives members of the public the chance to experience skydiving.
Karl now lives in Naas, Co Kildare. He originally lived in Carnmalin, Malin Head, the son of Aidan and Maureen Carey, and brother of Mark, Janine and Malcolm.

Transport Consultation
The Inishowen Development Partnership is now consulting with the community throughout Inishowen in order to ascertain transport needs in the peninsula and to draw up an effective plan to address those gaps in transport that impact most on the community. This is part of the Rural Transport Programme which is a national programme that supports the provision of public/community transport in rural areas. The three consultations arranged are as follows: on Monday May 12 at 7.30 pm in Tullyarvan Mill, Buncrana; on Tuesday May 13 at 7.30 pm, in Bocan Hall, Culdaff; on Wednesday May 14 at 7.30 pm in Quigley’s Point Community Centre, Quigley’s Point. Hydrographic Survey
The Marine Institute are conducting a hydrographic survey operation off the north coast of Donegal between 10 April and 9 May, mapping the seabed from Inishowen Head to Tory Island. The Celtic Voyager commenced working from Inishowen Head to Culdaff and Inistrahull. Over the last week the vessel was to be seen working between Killourt Bay and Tullagh Point. Information collated will be published online in June.
Alzheimer Tea Day
This year Alzheimer’s Tea Day will be held on this Thursday 1 May. This fundraising provides a lifeline for people with dementia and their families. Register to host an Alzheimer Tea Day in your area or workplace by calling www.teaday.ie to make a difference.
The Carndonagh Active Retirement Group will hold a Tea Day in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society in the Wesley Hall Basement on Thursday May 1 from 10.30am. to 4.30pm.
New Film
A movie set to be shot in Inishowen will feature Malin Head when it commences shooting in May. The Canada-based Sepia Films and Octagon Films Ireland will shoot A Shine of Rainbows, a family film. The film will be shot over 12 weeks and 66 people will be involved. The new movie will feature areas around Malin Head, the Isle of Doagh, Leenan and Buncrana. The team are currently recruiting extras for the film.
Accommodation Wanted

Sponsored Walk
A Sponsored Walk in aid of the Alan Doherty Fund will be held on Sunday 18 May at 3pm, leaving St. Mary’s Hall, Clonmany via Binion and Tullagh and the Rusty Nail and back to the hall for refreshments. Sports Field Draw
Malin Head Community Sports Committee run a Draw for a weekly prize of 500 euro. The draw on Saturday, April 26 was held in Farrens’ Bar and the lucky winner was Denis Kelly, Killourt, Malin Head, with ticket number 6. Next week’s draw will be held in the Crossroads Inn.
Carndonagh Feis
The Carndonagh Feis will be held this year on Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 of June. The Grand Opening of the GAA Centre in Malin will be held this Sunday, May 4, the May Bank Holiday weekend. An Inishowen Select side will play the Donegal senior team in honour of the occasion.

Culdaff Slí na Sláinte walking route will be launched on Thursday 1 May at 11.30am at Caratra, Culdaff. Come along and bring a friend. Refreshments in the Wee Hall after walk.
Culdaff Road Races
Inishowen Athletics Club will hold 5k and one-mile races on May 9. The juvenile race, age 11yrs to 16 years, begins at 7.30pm at the Post Office, Culdaff. The 5k race begins at 7.30 with the walkers taking off first. Walkers are encouraged to take part and are most welcome. Runners start at 7.45pm. All events start and finish at Culdaff Post Office. TEACH Laptop Project – FETAC Level 4
Inishowen Development Partnership is currently recruiting participants who have previously completed the TEACH Programme the opportunity to complete FETAC Level 4 (Computer Applications) from the comfort of their own homes. It’s the next step up from TEACH, an opportunity to learn more about computers. It will involve learning three new packages: Excel, Databases and PowerPoint and as well as recapping on the skills you have already learned. Its FETAC certified, comprising of 3 exams which means you will all have a recognised qualification at the end of it. The course will be the same format as before, training in the home, 2 and a half to 3 hours a week. They can be up to 4 to 6 participants per group.
