Sympathy Notice
Sincere sympathy is extended to the family and friends of the late James Hegarty. James was 96 years old and was born in Buncrana on the 12th March 1911. He was the last of his family and he had four brothers Paddy, John, Colm and Charlie and one sister Sarah. James worked for most of his youth in the family grocer shop and spent a year in London before returning to start his own business in 1946 selling wallpaper and paint. He diversified into ornaments in the fifties and in the sixties he bought Broadway (a well known dance hall) and later acquired Murphy’s Bar (originally the Londonderry Bar) and began the now famous Hegarty’s Furniture Store. James was a keen sportsman playing soccer in the thirties for a team known as the Spoilers. His main love was Golf and played regularly with the late Philip Doherty (Phildie), Mick Carey, the late Paddy Cross and the recently deceased Denis Hegarty. James was a well known character in Buncrana and will sadly be missed by all.
Tidy Town
Well done to Michael McLaughlin (Milu), a stalwart of the Tidy Towns over a great number of years, for painting the pillars at the Angling centre and for organising the planting of the beds at the same location. Every little bit of tidying or painting helps the image of the town. Well done also to Willie Grant who took time out to plant an area beside the Westbrook Bridge. The work of Rose Cullen and Rena Donaghey and other volunteers who have taken time to clean up areas of Buncrana is much appreciated. The effort put in by some of the businesses on the main street is clear to be seen.
