Well Done

Well done to Malin Head Youth Club for the beautiful arrangements of flowers and shrubs recently planted in the grounds of Star of the Sea Church, Malin Head. They add much beauty and fragrance to the entrance of the church. 

 

Charity Auction

In aid of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research to be held in Tullys Bar, Carndonagh on Sunday next May 4starting at 6pm.  Many items to be auctioned including a helicopter ride, signed sporting and showband memorabilia, a full day pass to Rally School Ireland, weekend breaks, VIP ticket to Villa Park.

Come along and treat yourself or a loved one to a fantastic present while helping a very worthy cause.

 

Death

The death took place in Boston of Rodger Houton, of Hyde Park, formerly of Ballyhelion, Malin Head, and Jamaica Plain, on April 10.  Rodger Houton was born in Malin Head, on January 27, 1924  to Rose Ann Houton (Doherty) and James Houton.  He was one of eight children.  His brothers were Bernard(Barney) who died in 2004, Thomas who died in 2002, and Daniel who died in 1981.  His sisters are Mary (Cullen) the only surviving sibling in the US, Ellen (Curran) who died in the US in 2007, Bridget(McLaughlin) who lives in Canada,  and Annie(Hunter) of Slieveban, Malin Head. Rodger was a hard-working man his entire life and was off working in Scotland at the age of 14. He emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts in 1948 where he met and married his wife Kathleen Nevin, originally from Co. Roscommon on May 24, 1954, but has been back to his birthplace several times since.  He was a retired Boston Gas employee with 42 years of service.  He loved telling stories and reminiscing about Ireland.  He was an avid sports fan.  He also enjoyed the company of his friends, Irish music, dancing and a good joke. His Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Dedham, and interment took place in New Calvary Cemetery. Sympathy is extended to his sons and daughters Geraldine M. Curran and her husband Paul of Hyde Park, Denis C. and Anne Houton of Jamaica Plain, Kathy A. Davis and her husband Jim of Nashua, NH, and James P. and his wife Vici of Appleton, Wisconsin; his sisters Mary Cullen of Jamaica Plain, Bridget McLaughlin of Canada, and Annie Hunter, Slieveban, Malin Head, 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, all his nieces and nephews in Ireland, the U.S. and Canada, and his many relations. He was pre-deceased by his wife Kathleen 30 years ago, and also his brothers and sister: the late Thomas Houton, Barney Houton, Ellen Curran and Daniel Houton.

 

Well done

Well done to Kieran O’Connor Farren, Slieveban, Malin Head, who was boxing in the junior cadets section in the National Stadium, Dublin last weekend.  He was beaten at the semi-final stage.  His season is now over after a very successful year in which he was crowned Ulster champion and got to an all Ireland final at boy 2, 48 kilos.  His parents, Kelly Anne and Robert wish to thank his coaches at Carndonagh ABC for taking him to all the tournaments throughout the year.

 

Pilgrimage to Malin Well

The Annual Pilgrimage to the ruined Church and Grotto at Malin Well will take place on Sunday, May 11, leaving the Star of the Sea Church, Malin Head at 3pm. A minibus will be provided for those who have difficulty walking.

 

Tenders Invited

Tenders are invited from interested parties regarding proposed works to be completed at St. Mary’s NS Malin Head during July/August 2008.  Details available from school during school hours. Closing date for receipt of quotations is this Friday 2 May.



 

Fashion and beauty

A fabulous fashion and beauty night will be held in the Ballyliffin Lodge on Thursday, May 1 at 8pm in aid of Kiddies Corner, Malin Community Playgroup.  Jewellery, fashion, shoes, bags, perfume, make-up and those must-haves for ladies of all ages.  There will be fashion parades throughout the night with a grand makeover finale for three lucky ladies. Tickets available in usual local outlets, playgroup and with all contributors.

 

Teen Disco

A May Bank Holiday Teen Disco will be held in Tul na Ri, Carndonagh on Friday May 2, from 9.15 – 11.15pm.  Music by DJ Steve.  In aid of Carndonagh Boxing Club.  Strictly no alcohol.

 

CCS School Reunion

Did you start C.C.S. in 1993?  Did you sit the Leaving Cert in 1998?  If so, there is a ten year reunion planned for Sunday May 4 in the Ballyliffin Hotel. Tickets are 25 euro for Dinner, Band and Disco and are on sale in Valu-Clean (Buncrana, Carndonagh and Moville) and Norris’ Shop, Moville.  Tickets to be bought by 27 April.  All proceeds to charity.

 

Daredevil Karl

A Malin Head man is searching for daredevil types to help him break an Irish record.  Skydiver Karl Carey needs 100 people to jump out of a plane with him on Friday August 1. The record-breaking charity attempt is part of the annual Irish Skydiving Festival.  The day will benefit charities all over Ireland and raise thousands of euro for their great causes.

Karl began skydiving ten years ago at the Irish Parachute Club in County Offaly, and has logged over 1,300 jumps.  He is a fully qualified skydiving instructor and tandem master.  He has a business called Skydive 4 Charity which gives members of the public the chance to experience skydiving.

Karl now lives in Naas, Co Kildare.  He originally lived in Carnmalin, Malin Head, the son of Aidan and Maureen Carey, and brother of Mark, Janine and Malcolm.

Transport Consultation

The Inishowen Development Partnership is now consulting with the community throughout Inishowen in order to ascertain transport needs in the peninsula and to draw up an effective plan to address those gaps in transport that impact most on the community.  This is part of the Rural Transport Programme which is a national programme that supports the provision of public/community transport in rural areas.  The three consultations arranged are as follows: on Monday May 12 at 7.30 pm in Tullyarvan Mill, Buncrana; on Tuesday May 13 at 7.30 pm, in Bocan Hall, Culdaff; on Wednesday May 14 at 7.30 pm in Quigley’s Point Community Centre, Quigley’s Point.  For further information contact Pauline or John at Inishowen Development Partnership at 07493-62218

Hydrographic Survey

The Marine Institute are conducting a hydrographic survey operation off the north coast of Donegal between 10 April and 9 May, mapping the seabed from Inishowen Head to Tory Island.  The Celtic Voyager commenced working from Inishowen Head to Culdaff and Inistrahull.  Over the last week the vessel was to be seen working between Killourt Bay and Tullagh Point.  Information collated will be published online in June.

 

Alzheimer Tea Day

This year Alzheimer’s Tea Day will be held on this Thursday 1 May.  This fundraising provides a lifeline for people with dementia and their families.  Register to host an Alzheimer Tea Day in your area or workplace by calling www.teaday.ie to make a difference.

The Carndonagh Active Retirement Group will hold a Tea Day in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society in the Wesley Hall Basement on Thursday May 1 from 10.30am. to 4.30pm.  

 

New Film

A movie set to be shot in Inishowen will feature Malin Head when it commences shooting in May. The Canada-based Sepia Films and Octagon Films Ireland will shoot A Shine of Rainbows, a family film.  The film will be shot over 12 weeks and 66 people will be involved. The new movie will feature areas around Malin Head, the Isle of Doagh, Leenan and Buncrana.  The team are currently recruiting extras for the film.

 

Accommodation Wanted

Accomodation is required for the Irish Seniors Golf Open which will be held in Ballyliffin Golf Club in mid-June this year.  Anyone with a suitable house to let between Monday 16 June and Sunday 22 June should forward details to Ballyliffin Golf Club on 9376119.

 

Sponsored Walk

Sports Field Draw

Malin Head Community Sports Committee run a Draw for a weekly prize of 500 euro.  The draw on Saturday, April 26 was held in Farrens’ Bar and the lucky winner was Denis Kelly, Killourt, Malin Head, with ticket number 6.  Next week’s draw will be held in the Crossroads Inn.

 

Carndonagh Feis

The Carndonagh Feis will be held this year on Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 of June.  The Feis Syllabus will be sent out to all the local schools and the closing date for entries will be this Friday, May 2 and could all cups/shields be returned on or by that day to Karen Mc Laughlin, Malin Road, Carndonagh 087 2987370 (200 yards down the Malin Road from the roundabout on left hand side with red front door.)

 

Senior Ladies GAA Training

GAA Opening

The Grand Opening of the GAA Centre in Malin will be held this Sunday, May 4, the May Bank Holiday weekend.  An Inishowen Select side will play the Donegal senior team in honour of the occasion.

Culdaff Slí na Sláinte walking route will be launched on Thursday 1 May at 11.30am at Caratra, Culdaff.  Come along and bring a friend.  Refreshments in the Wee Hall after walk.

Culdaff Road Races

Inishowen Athletics Club will hold 5k and one-mile races on May 9. The juvenile race, age 11yrs to 16 years, begins at 7.30pm at the Post Office, Culdaff.  The 5k race begins at 7.30 with the walkers taking off first. TEACH Laptop Project – FETAC Level 4
Inishowen Development Partnership is currently recruiting participants who have previously completed the TEACH Programme the opportunity to complete FETAC Level 4 (Computer Applications) from the comfort of their own homes.  It’s the next step up from TEACH, an opportunity to learn more about computers.  It will involve learning three new packages: Excel, Databases and PowerPoint and as well as recapping on the skills you have already learned.  Its FETAC certified, comprising of 3 exams which means you will all have a recognised qualification at the end of it.  The course will be the same format as before, training in the home, 2 and a half to 3 hours a week.  They can be up to 4 to 6 participants per group. The course will run for 15 weeks, it will commence in April.  If you are interested in participating in this exciting course, contact Tutor: Sinead McDaid on (086 821 6306) or (93 62218).  It will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Pilgrimage to Malin Well

Death

The death has occurred at Carndonagh District Hospital after a short illness of Mick Quigley, Lowertown, Malin. The large number of people who called to his wake at his sister Kathleen’s home at Ballylannon, Malin to offer their sympathy and attended his funeral reflected the high esteem in which he was held. He was a quiet good natured man who had a great love of music and gardening. His Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr Brian Brady.  Hymns were sung by Danny McCarron and the Lessons were read by his nieces Irene and Margaret. Prayers of the Faithful were read by his nephew Sean and his grandniece Aoibheann and grand-nephew Ronan. Offertory Gifts were brought to the altar by his grand-nieces Caoimhe and Shauna and his grand-nephew Oran.  Deepest sympathy is extended to his sister Kathleen, his brother Wully (New York), to his nieces Irene, Margaret and Patricia and nephews Sean and Kevin and all his grand-nieces and grand-nephews and his friends.

Hospice Support Group

The Foyle and Donegal Hospices, Buncrana Support Group, present a social evening of Entertainment and Floral Art Exhibits in the Lake of Shadows Hotel, Buncrana on Thursday, April 24 at 8pm. Admission is 5 euro including a savoury supper.  Approximately one hundred displays and various prizes (all donated) will be raffled on the night. Entertainment will be provided by Pauline Saunders, Kathy McCarthy, Stewart Buchanan, James Boyle and Irish Dancing by Aidan and Rachael McGinley, who are all giving their time free of charge. MC.on the night will be Nicholas Crossan. Everyone is very welcome. DACC Prayer Service

Donegal Action for Cancer Care invites you to an Interdenominational Service for those affected by cancer. It will take place in St Eunan’s Cathedral, Letterkenny, on Sunday, April 27 at 3pm. Confirmation

Confirmation was conferred on sixth class pupils from the Malin parish on Sunday last April 13 in St Patrick’s Church, Aughaclay by Bishop Francis Lagan. Children from St. Mary’s NS, Malin Head who received the Sacrament were: Aoife Doherty, Westown; Bridgeen Doherty, Ballygorman; Niamh Stevens, Middletown; Stephanie Glackin, Ballygorman; Linda Coffey, Ballygorman; Aine Doherty, Muckla; and Eamon Hegarty, Westown.  Children from Urblereagh NS were Edel Mc Laughlin, Glengad Mountain; Denise Doherty, Lowerbraghey; James Mullin, Bree; and Niomi McLaughlin, Letterorr.

Hydrographic Survey

The Marine Institute will be conducting a hydrographic survey operation off the north coast of Donegal between April 10 and May 9.  The Celtic Voyager is expected to survey from Dunmore Head westwards to Malin Head.  It will operated from the 10m contour to the 30m limit, which includes the area around Inistrahull Island.  It is then planned to move around Malin Head into Trawbreaga Bay and continue hydrographic survey operations there. This work is being carried out under the European-funded Joint Irish Bathymetric Survey programme.  The data obtained will be used to update the navigational charts and, once ratified, be available via the web.  For additional information contact the Marine Institute on 091 387200.

The annual Malin IFA dance was held in the Malin Hotel on Saturday, March 15. Proceeds this year were in aid of Self Help Development International, an Irish charity which helps farmers in developing countries, and a total of €979.49 was raised. A minute’s silence was held on the night in memory of Danny and Francis McDaid of Glengad.

All-Ireland finalist

Congratulations to Kieran O’Connor Farren, Slieveban who was competing at the National Boxing Finals at the National Stadium at the weekend. Kieran was competing in the 48kg category and won his semi-final 6-1, when he beat Gerard Mc Corley from Toome on Friday last. The final was held the following day where he met with Conor Mc Donald, a southpaw from Gorey, Co. Wexford, who defeated Kieran 14-5. This is Kieran’s first competition outside Ulster, where he is the reigning title holder at this weight.  As runner-up for the national title in his category, Kieran received a medal and was also presented with a special boxing vest by the Amateur Boxing Association of Ireland.  Kieran was accompanied to the finals by his parents Kelly Anne and Robert, and his brothers and sisters, and his coaches John Mulhern and Liam Owen of Carndonagh Boxing Club.  His family express their gratitude to the coaches for their dedication.

 

Death

The death has taken place at Letterkenny General Hospital of Ellen Nora Doherty, Bree, Malin Head. She was aged 92 and was only a short time in hospital. Ellen Nora was a hardworking woman, who worked in both Belfast and Derry, before returning to work in Carndonagh.  She worked for many years in Mc Carter’s Factory in Bree up until her retirement.  Her only son Frankie took exemplary care of his mother in her later years. Ellen Nora’s remains were brought home to her late residence, and her funeral was held  on Good Friday, March 21, to the Star of the Sea Church, Malin Head, for Liturgy of the Word.  he service was conducted by Fr Brendan Crowley, CC assisted by Fr Tom Mullin. The Lessons were read by Margaret Glackin Haran. The Offertory Gifts were presented by Barbara Doherty and James Joseph Doherty. Burial took place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lagg, Malin.

Requiem Mass for Ellen Nora was concelebrated by Fr Crowley, CC. and Fr Tom Mullin on Monday, March 24, in the Star of the Sea Church, Malin Head. The Lessons were read by Margaret Glackin Haran and the Offertory Gifts were presented by Barbara Doherty and James Joseph Doherty. Music and singing was rendered by Julie Anne Devlin.

Deepest sympathy is extended to Ellen Nora’s only son Frankie, her sister Brigid Collins, Manchester; her nieces Kathleen Toland and Margaret and Tony O’Kane; her nephews Edward Collins, Joe Snow, Patrick Snow and Matthew Snow; her cousins Mary Kathleen Brown, Margaret Mc Laughlin, Hannah Doherty, Margaret Haran, Ellen Glackin, Anne Doherty, Johnny Glackin and Laurence Glackin.  Also to all her neighbours and friends.

The Camera Club Inishowen meets in Serenity House, Montgomery Terrace, Moville tomorrow Thursday, April 3 at 7.30 pm. The theme of the meeting is Black and White conventional photography. They are always delighted to welcome new members.

New Film

A movie set to be shot in Inishowen will feature Malin Head when it commences shooting on April 21. The Canad-based Sepia Films and Octagon Films Ireland will shoot A Shine of Rainbows, a family film. The film will be shot over 12 weeks and 66 people will be involved. The new movie will feature areas around Malin Head, the Isle of Doagh, Leenan and Buncrana.

Malin GAA Club membership for 2008 is now due, and will be collected in the next few weeks.  Membership is 10 euro per adult, 2 euro per minor and 20 euro for family membership.  Club members will have priority for tickets for Donegal games.  Kevin Farren will collect the Malin Head area; David Gallagher and Patrick Collins will do the Culdaff area; Patrick and Shaun Houton will do the Culkeeny/Glengad areas and Martin Mc Colgan will cover Malin Town. 

 

GAA Opening

The Grand Opening of the GAA Centre in Malin has been set for Sunday 4 May, the May Bank Holiday weekend.  An Inishowen Select side will play the Donegal senior team in honour of the occasion.

 

Volunteers Needed

Inishowen Women’s Outreach would appreciate a couple of hours of your spare time and are seeking volunteers for some of the services it provides: Helpline - Listening Ear - Advocacy - Court Accompaniment - Support Group - Counselling for Women – Counselling for Children – Awareness Raising.  Closing date for next training is March 20. Easter ceremonies

The churches were thronged during Holy Week for the Easter Ceremonies. Despite the early Easter and bitter cold, there were many visitors to the area, and numbers were swollen with visiting family members

 

Hall renovations

Renovation work on the Malin Head Community Hall is set to start shortly. Activities in the hall have been suspended until the work is completed. Whist continues in St Mary’s NS, Malin Head.

 

CCS parents’ meeting

A very important meeting to elect two parent nominees to contest the election to the board of management of Carndonagh Community School will be held on Monday, March 31 at 9pm in Scoil Treasa Naofa, Malin. Parents from Glengad, Malin and Malin Head should attend.

 

New film

A movie set to be shot in Inishowen will feature Malin Head when it commences shooting on April 21. The Canada-based Sepia Films and Octagon Films Ireland will shoot A Shine of Rainbows, a family film. The film will be shot over 12 weeks and 66 people will be involved.  The new movie will feature areas around Malin Head, the Isle of Doagh, Leenan and Buncrana.

 

Enrol for Urblereagh NS

Enrolment Forms for Urblereagh National School are now available at the school’s temporary location at the GAA Centre, Malin. Completed forms should be returned by April 4.

 

Depression Support Group

For those who experience depression a Support Group meets on the second and fourth Monday of every month at 7.30pm in the nursing unit, Maginn Avenue, Buncrana. If you need a listening ear call the Aware helpline on 1890 303 302 or visit www.aware.ie

 

Carers’ information

For information for those caring for an older person, drop-in clinics will be held on the last Monday of each month in Carndonagh Community Hospital. For further information contact 087 2770103.

Sportsfield draw

Malin Head Community Sports Committee runs a draw for a weekly prize of 500 euro. The draw on Saturday, March 22 was held in the Crossroads Inn and the lucky winner was ticket number 69, Danny and Bernard Doherty, (Roddy), Malin Head. Next week’s draw will be held in Farren’s Bar.

 

Carndonagh Feis

Carndonagh Féis will be held this year on Friday, June 20, Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22. The féis syllabus will be sent out to all the local schools by mid-March and the closing date for entries will be Friday, May 2 and could all cups/shields be returned on or by that day to Karen Mc Laughlin Malin Road, Carndonagh 087 2987370 (200 yards down the Malin Road from the roundabout on left hand side with red front door).
